~~~~~ooo~~~~~ Sentry Keagan, Thank you for your interest and desire for the position of Weave Captain. I have been observing all the guildsmen since inception of the Weave Masters and will be ready to make my choice within the week ((real life week)). I will be deciding on a Weave Overwatch as well within the same time frame. In response to your questions, I am looking for individuals of good repute, sound mind, strong leadership, and dedicated resolve in our guild missions. You and your brother are definitely two that have caught my eye although my decision has not yet been set in stone. Completion of a few tests will be required as well but I will reveal them at a later time. Continue the good fight and may patience find you throughout this week.
May the Weave protect you, Exarch Nahum
~~~~~ooo~~~~~ ///OOC: I'm also looking for someone that RP's well and is involved in the guild.

Exarch Nahum,
It is with great urgency that I pen this letter. The last tenday has been quite eventful and our fellow guildmates should be forwarned.
It was not but a few days past that Guardian Keagan, Adept Elias, Loremaster Jhaelen, and a handful of other adventurers marched to the aid of Beregost. The town was over run by a host of beasts, spiders, and abominations of woodland creatures. It was determined that the source of this evil was a pit that recently opened to the south of town. I have been unable to locate this pit, but will notify you if I do. The smith, Thunderhammer, has more information should you require it.
In a separate incident, a group of Fists that were patrolling south of Beregost near the ruins went missing. A few fellow rangers and I had begun to look for the group and had just spotted drow seemingly led by an octopus-faced beast when a larger group of adventurers rushed into the canyon and by storming headlong, alerted them to our position. The battle was intense, and at the end we encountered a great deal of human spellcasters, dressed in black and using what I believe to be Necromantic wizardry. I was able to acquire a book from one of the fallen - I hold it for now until someone is able to identify it. Alas, the Fists were found dead, but what concerns me is that there seems to be a growing evil that must be investigated and stopped.
I will fill you in more when we meet personally.

A parchment in expensive paper and sealed with wax bearing the Exarch's mark is delivered to Keagan and Kahlen. ~~~~~ooo~~~~~
Keagan and Kahlen Wyndsoul,
As you know, the Weave Masters are coming to a point in time where strong leaders are needed to establish our guild. Our numbers are slowly growing and I am finding that its administration is becoming a burden to bear. It is a burden I gladly carry but with the dangers besetting the land and our guild, I have come to the conclusion that it is time for me to delegate some of my responsibilities.
Ever since our first meeting, I knew there was something to be said of the Wyndsoul name. Confirmation of my first suspicions have reached my ears manyfold over the course of many weeks. With this I have decided to put you through the test given only to those worthy to be called Captains and OverWatches of the guild
These tasks can only be accomplished by the two of you without outside help. You can bring whatever equipment you need except the enchantments of another. Your first task is to gather information on all merchants a Weave Master can obtain scrolls for learning. ((i.e. Complete the 1st guild quest I listed earlier in this thread.)) This will demonstrate your ability to find locations of arcane interest as the charge of an OverWatch
The second and final task will demonstrate your ability to use your cunning and strength to overcome the foes that even an ArchMage will reconsider facing. Finding the object that you seek is again the fulfillment of an Overwatch and the defeat of this nemesis will prove the worth of a Captain. Shall we begin then?
In dark places, the beetles scuttle With blank faces, victim's minds a muddle. Unblinking and many, it stares upon your soul Your magics are useless, those diamonds are but coal. Return to me the many, your task will be complete. The burden that you seek will be cast upon your feet.
Signed, Weave Exarch Nahum

A humble scholar in torn robes, covered in scorch marks makes his way slowly to the Istari Tower. Using his staff as a walking aid he slowly limps inside and tosses a scroll onto a desk near the entrance, sighs deeply and walks back out.
Fellow Weave Masters,
It is with grave concern that I have penned this letter. These occurances took place last night after the induction of our new initiate. Kahlen and I were the last two remaining members of our order travelling to Baldur's Gate. All was well, and we were talking whilst we strolled along the trade way. Out of nowhere came a heavily armoured orc who told us he carried a message. When we asked about his message he attacked us telling us it was of death! With the aid of two other travellers, we were able to slay very well seasoned orc. To our dismay we were all very well beaten. We sent the traveller ranger to the city to warn the Fist of the presence of something foul. For after the orc was defeated we were swarmed with spiders! Kahlen knew that we could not keep fighting at the rate we were, and called us to retreat to the city in hopes of better defense. A very wise decision that was, for in the farmlands we found Cpl. Aiden McBride of the Fist along with a handful of other adventurers.
It appeared we were quite safe until the ground nearly shook us from our feet, and blinding flashes of light were seen in the fields of Jorn! The closer we came to the light, the more we all realized what what happening. A portal was being opened to another plane! The good Corporal ordered his men to surround the portal and attack anything that came through. Kahlen, I, and several others, stood behind the Fist and waited for seemingly endless time, when out of the portal came a whole regiment of heavily armored bugbears! The battle raged, with the Fist taking the hardest, initial blow from the bugbear onslaught. All the while Kahlen was firing arrows into their ranks, and I was aiding with what spells I could muster. Cpl. McBride stood tall in the middle of the fight, a shining light in the darkness of the enemy! Giving us all hope that our battle would be won. In the end, many were wounded, several soldiers had fallen, but the bugbears were held, and the portal snapped shut with a suddenness that rivaled a crack of lightning. After the fight, those that remained discussed at length the cause of these portals. Many theories were poured over. Being the only Weave Master present from our order, I pledged our aid to the Flaming Fist in defense of the surrounding lands. Kahlen as well offered the aid of the Scout Masters. With many thanks said, we were about to part ways when the ground started shaking tremendously once again! Weary from our last battle, everybody present feared for the worst.
In my studies I have found that the man who appeared to us in pitch black armour, having the most evil set of red eyes I have ever witnessed, was a blackguard of some sort. Though he did not give us his name. He struck his whole audience with fear like none other! Soon after he appeared Sgt. Crownsilver arrived on the scene, only to stand behind the blackguard unnoticed, or so it seemed. The dark warrior disappeared, and came directly if front of the Sgt. He spoke of a person with knowledge of the arcane that he seeks. Unfortunately I do not recall the name of this arcanist, Kahlen may very well hold that knowledge. The dark one gave us a warning. That if we did not deliver his mage within a week, something unspeakably terrible would happen in the lands! Then he was gone, and we were left to ourselves, some still shaking in fear, others in disbelief.
My fellow Weave Masters, the account I have given is to the best of my knowledge, and entirely true! Kahlen Wyndsoul fought most bravely for the honor of our order that night. As many other brave adventurers fought for their own, at least for their very lives. This demonic knight, this blackguard, threatens the very fabric of the Weave itself. Cpl. McBride is an honorable man, and that night we acknowledged the fact that it will take the combined power of our entire community to keep ourselves and others safe from this immense power that threatens us all. Now that you are informed of these tragic happenings, I go to rest. For it is well that I rest all I can before setting back out of the city for another day.
Sincerely, Weave Adept Elias Goodmane

~~~~~ooo~~~~~ "Esteemed colleagues of the Weave Masters, I hereby present my long overdue work from my many hours at Candlekeep Library, my research book on the arcane. It is possible I will pen more on this, and perhaps make a 2nd edition print. But I will allow for you too read this first and rather rough edition, may it be a stepping stone to greater understanding of the weave"
-Sion Spellfire~~~~~ooo~~~~~ [glow=red,2,300]"Liber Arcanum"[/glow] ARCANE MAGIC These are typically spells devoted to manipulating energy, converting one substance to another, or calling on the services of other creatures. For wizards, these spells are generally committed to memory after a session of meditation upon a spellbook containing the details of the incantation; sorcerers and bards know their spells innately and do not need to prepare them at all, nor do they require a spellbook. Once prepared, the spell is cast using specific words, gestures and sometimes a specific material component.
Each spell belongs to one of eight groups, called schools. A wizard may specialize in one school, but at the expense of completely forsaking one other. A few spells are universal, meaning that they belong to no particular school of magic.THE SCHOOLS ABJURATIONAbjurations are protective spells. They create physical or magical barriers, negate magical or physical abilities, harm trespassers, or even banish the subject of the spell to another plane of existence. They include dispel magic and resist energy. A wizard who specializes in abjuration is known as an abjurer. CONJURATION Conjurations can bring manifestations of objects, creatures, or some form of energy to the caster for brief intervals, transport creatures from another plane of existence, transport creatures or objects over great distances, or create objects or effects on the spot. Conjured creatures usually, but not always, obey the caster's commands. Spells of the conjuration school include the various summon monster spells and gate. A wizard who specializes in conjuration is known as a conjurer. DIVINATIONDivination spells enable the caster to learn secrets long forgotten, to predict the future, to find hidden things, and to foil deceptive spells. They include detect magic and scry. Divination is often considered the "weakest" of the schools. A wizard who specializes in divination is known as a diviner. ENCHANTMENT Enchantment spells manipulate the energies of the physical world, they allow magical energies to be stored within inanimate, or sometimes even living matter. Enchantments can also affect a certain area within which the spell is cast, or the very mind or mobility of a living being. Wizards specializing in enchantment magic are known as enchanters. EVOCATION Evocation spells manipulate energy or tap an unseen source of power to produce a desired end. In effect, they create something out of nothing. Many of these spells produce spectacular effects, and evocation spells can deal large amounts of damage. A wizard who specializes in evocation is known as an evoker.ILLUSIONIllusion spells deceive the senses or minds of others. They cause people to see things that are not there, not see things that are there, hear phantom noises, or remember things that never happened. A wizard who specializes in illusion is called an illusionist. NECROMANCYNecromancy spells manipulate the power of death, unlife, and the life force. Spells involving undead creatures make up a large part of this school. Spells of the necromancy school include animate dead and finger of death. A wizard who specializes in necromancy is called a necromancer. TRANSMUTATION Transmutation spells change the physical properties of some creature, thing, or condition. They include bull's strength and the various polymorph spells. A wizard who specializes in transmutation is known as a transmuter.UNIVERSALUniversal spells have effects too broad to place into one class, or too useful for any specialist to consider forsaking. They often can perform multiple effects, or perform a very specific effect that does not fit into another category. RITUALS Rituals are divided into nine categories: binding, creation, deception, divination, exploration, restoration, scrying, travel and warding. Each ritual has a key skill, Arcana, Heal, Nature or Religion, some rituals have multiple key skills. Most Rituals require components. There are five classes of ritual components: alchemical reagents can be used for arcana rituals, mystic salves can be used for heal rituals, rare herbs can be used for nature rituals, sanctified incense can be used for religion rituals and residuum can be used for any ritual, using a ritual scroll eliminates the component requirement. Rituals are performed from books or scrolls.CASTING The casting of spells requires the mage to do or say something for the spell to work. Spells may require a verbal or somatic focus.VERBAL COMPONENTMany spells require the caster to speak certain words, or, in the case of a bard, create music, to cast a spell. Being prevented from speaking, by such means as a gag or magical effects that remove sounds, makes it impossible for a caster to cast such a spell. A deafened caster may also fail when casting a spell, by misspeaking, which causes the spell to be lost.SOMATIC COMPONENTMany spells require the caster to make a motion to cast the spell. If the caster is unable to make the correct motion, the spell cannot be cast.SCRYING A scrying spell creates an invisible magical sensor that sends you information. Unless noted otherwise, the sensor has the same powers of sensory acuity that you possess. This level of acuity includes any spells or effects that target you, but not spells or effects that emanate from you. However, the sensor is treated as a separate, independent sensory organ of yours, and thus it functions normally even if you have been blinded, deafened, or otherwise suffered sensory impairment. Any highly intelligent creature can possibly notice the sensor. The sensor can be dispelled as if it were an active spell. Lead sheeting or magical protection blocks a scrying spell, and you sense that the spell is so blocked.SPELL RESISTANCE Spell resistance is a special defensive ability, that can be achieved through magic, magical items or racial traits. The defender’s spell resistance is like an armor against magical attacks, to successfully overcome this armor only your casting experience and sheer spellpower is a factor. However, there are some known spells that will decrease the defenders spell resistance dramatically. These include Assay Resistance, Spell Breach and Mordenkainens Disjunction. ARCANE MAGICAL WRITINGS To record an arcane spell in written form, a wizard uses complex notation that describes the magical forces involved in the spell. The writer uses the same system no matter what his native language or culture. However, each wizard uses the system in his own way. Another person’s magical writing remains incomprehensible to even the most powerful wizard until he takes time to study and decipher it. It is different how complex scrolls and spellbooks has been written, and it is also simply a matter of time to decipher a scroll or spellbook, at least for the common wizard. Given the universality of this system, it is also possible for wizards to willingly exchange spells without deciphering each others writings, however the wizards must instruct each other in the required verbal or somatic components to ensure success. Learning a spell from sheer writings, takes many attempts and failures for the common wizard. WARNING: Should you ever encounter a lost spellbook, take heed!. Many wizards place magical locks and booby traps on their spellbooks, in order to protects its content.Sion Spellfire, 1351 DR
~~~~~ooo~~~~~ "I have had some more time to write on my work "Liber Arcanum", this time covering the knowledge i have gathered on scrying, spell resistance and magical arcane writings. I hope the lore will serve well, and bring more light to the mysteries of the arcane I know some of this is basic for some of you, and let me assure you there will be more advanced areas covered in my book in the future."

A messenger is sent to find Exarch Nahum...upon finding him he hands him a folded piece of parchment...
Exarch Nahum,
There is someone that I am considering for the Weave Guardians. He goes by the name of Flail. But I am having difficulty placing him due to the fact that he is a caster. As you know my god has disconnected me from the Weave, so I cannot identify the spells he casts. I ask for your help in this.

A mysterious messenger arrives in front of the Istari tower with a letter in his hands.
Deliver this to Cpt. Keagan, please. There is someone looking for him.
The letter obviously was written by a third person and it contains the mark of a black lion.
Captain Keagan,
A warrior by the name of Beorg Olivar seeks to have a meeting with you to discuss what he calls "The Action". He would be glad to share some Ale in the tavern also.
The letter is not signed.

I know this man you speak of. I met him when I first arrived to Baldur's Gate. He seems to be a man that helps fight against the evils here in this land. I have great reservations however. I have spoken to him in the past in regards to the magic he uses. With my knowledge in spellcraft, I have been able to determine the origin of his powers. It is a magic that is often the result of infernal pacts. A magic, through its use, causes an individual to darken their hearts. As you know, the source of such invocations and the darkness they cause in one's heart goes against the tenets we live by. Even if his heart can withstand the evil these invocations cause, the resident belief is that all that use such magic are evil. Given the attention our fellowship has received, it may not be wise to attract negative feelings from the general populace. Unless compelling evidence and reasoning can be presented, we may have to deny his request. He can serve as an ally but membership is ill advised.
Signed, Exarch Nahum

The following note is hand delivered to Nahum by Naryldur, a runner for the Weave Scouts:
Exarch,
It has been long since I’ve seen you, and wanted to give you an update.
As you may have noticed, the recent battles we’ve experienced have left me a bit rattled. Indeed it is only now that I can finally tell you that I have been battling dark feelings and the coldness that has accompanied them since that first portal opened near Beregost. I felt as if the shadow itself had invaded my body, and everywhere I turned the darkness seemed more thick, almost tangible. Dark dreams terrorized my nights and feelings of revenge and hostility dominated my days. I had begun to feel like I was one with the shadows, and became darker in form and in mind. Fortunately, through much meditation and communion with my god, I have begun to beat back these feelings and although my connection to shadow remains strong, I am able to wield it as a tool of my own and am no longer haunted by it’s power. Although my struggles have left me a bit weaker, I feel that the newfound control of the same shadows I once feared will only make our order stronger. I look forward to exploring this new affinity and it’s possible benefits.
In other news, I have initiated a new member into the Weave Scouts. The identity of this operative will be shared with you in person at the next opportunity, as I have reservations about putting the name to paper. This scout will be a fine addition to our team, and will be working in secret to provide details of local happenings.
Perem Gemini, a recently initiated adept of our order was attacked (along with her party) not a tenday past. I happened along the group after they had battled the various beings pouring forth, and asked that she contact you with information detailing her experience. I was informed that she was afflicted with a sort of cloaking shadow but was able to overcome it. Perhaps her luck will guide us in future battles with the Ramsets?
Seek me out at your earliest convenience.
Ever Vigilant, Kahlen Wyndsoul

There is a knock at the tower in the middle of the night. When the door is opened no one is there, an arrow is shot into the door with a message attached to it. The message reads as follows:
there was an incident in the bugbear minds today. It started with a group of adventures getting ambushed by lizard folk. They managed to fight them off but were yet again ambushed but this time it was bugbears. The adventures went into the mines to take a look. they fought through the waves of bugbears to get to the second floor. On the second floor there were more bugbears and umber hulk, they seemed to all be very organized and daring. Upon exploring the mine it was found to be that they were all being controlled by a mind flayer and were being forced to mine the ore. They engaged the enemy but..... were unsuccessful. When they came to all the ore was gone and completely mined away. A halfling by the name of Leato stated that there was voice in his head at the start of the fight stating that the puppet master was unhappy but thats all he could remember. I will continue to look for clues to find out why the ore was mined and who was having them mine it. I will also look more into the puppet master that was spoken of. I don't know how serious of a threat this new enemy is but I pray to the god's the ore wasn't for the Ramset family.

After reading Weave Scout reports of diviners or arcanists animating and summoning the undead, Nahum sits back on his chair and begins to consider the letter he is about to pen. Finally, he dips his feathered quill into some ink and writes a missive to his guildsmen. ~~~~~ooo~~~~~ Guildsmen,
It has come to my attention that there are those around us that will not leave the dead in peace, animating their lifeless bodies with undeath to be used as peons in their dubious plans. As you may know as well, many who use the Weave in such a way rarely stop at animating or summoning the undead. It is usually a sign that the summoning of devils and demons will often come next. The Weave should not be used to commit such atrocities and should not be used in way that will endanger our Material Plane.
I charge you with this: First try to convince those so willing to abuse the Weave of the error of their ways. If no amount of reason is possible, respect the dead and return those summoned back to their graves. If they return in ashes, so let it be. Allow their souls to rest. Do not engage the undead practitioner unless your own life is threatened.
Too many rifts to the dark planes have been opened already and I know you have witnessed them as well. The following are descriptions of those already found to be undead practitioners. Stay vigilant, my brothers and sisters...
*A description follows of Norol Risen* This man has also attacked Weave Seeker Lyra on more than one occasion and should be considered hostile and dangerous.
Another is armored as one of the Flaming Fist Apothecaries so due care must be exercised as well. Be careful not to accuse so quickly but note that Apothecaries rarely travel on their own.
May the Weave protect you, Weave Exarch Nahum ~~~~~ooo~~~~~
//OOC: Before you engage the undead summon, give a courtesy OOC tell and your RP reason why. If the other player doesn't want to RP it, doing it once is probably okay. No need to follow the PC and grief his/her undead summons. Just ignore him/her at that point.

Another note related to the previous missive is penned directly to the Weave Scouts and sent via the Overwatch. ~~~~~ooo~~~~~ Weave Scouts,
First off, I thank you for your missives and reports. Continue the good work but I add that we should try to find the identities of these undead summoners. They will soon progress to summon demons and devils and it behooves us to know our enemies.

Exarch Nahum,
I was approached by a man on the trade way today, who was claiming that his daughter had been kidnapped by the orcs of the sharpteeth wood. We made haste into the wood, to an old abandoned house. He then disappeared into a cloud of darkness, when he emerged he was wearing a black cloak and armor. The man also had a black beard on his face. The asked me of the Weave Masters and seemed to know who I was. He told me that he intended to test me. He summoned a few undead which I quickly dispatched. Then he summoned a devil of some sort. A large winged creature with fangs and fire in it's eyes! I battled with the creature, It landed a few blows that rattled me to the core. I plunged my sword in the throat of the foul beast and it gurgled on its own blood and faded from existence. The Foul man then cast a spell that summoned blades that surrounded him. The next I new he started to cast another. A pain hit my heart like none I had ever felt before, I felt the life draining from my chest. As I fell to the ground he released another cloud of darkness and ran away leaving me for dead. I fell unconscious and awoke in agony.
We must rid the land of the foul man before he hurts anyone else. I will be in my quarters if you should need me..I must recover.
