grep or sed is your friend here, do a getline and parse the test for '//' || '((' or whatever OOC symbol is used.

yar simple checks for \\ // and some specific ooc words like "level", "experience points", "lol" etc should work in theory.
would be nice as it would keep folks in character (you can still use the pm channel for ooc chatter) and even if you did lose xp for using \\ooc chatter it would be minimal.
the abuse could be moderated i believe as long as the xp granted for chatting is not large.
i mean even if you attempted to abuse a system like this as long it's oh say 300-600xp per hour it shouldn't mean much at all.
dm catches you abusing and you lose xp.
easy enough.
but of course it all depends upon decent scripting which i know nothing about...harhar

seems to be the case i lost about 1000xp from my level 2 drow last night. back to beginning of level 2 ;-) It would appear that the xp penalty is currently set to 30% of your total xps. In most cases, once you hit level 5 or 6, this will set you back to the beginning of your level. The upside is that if you have no xps in your level, you won't lose xps. It will no longer knock you down a level. If you die, contact a DM if they are on until this is fixed.

Here are some numbers on the XP system for soloing:
Level 13 before
Ogre: 22-24 XP (I'm not sure which)
With the 25% decrease, this should go to around 17-18 XP per kill.
Level 13 after
Ogre: 2 XP
This is the equivalent of around a 91% percent XP drop.
So in conclusion, I think there's a mistake somewhere. ;D

XP has to be, in my opinion that hardest thing to set up for a PW. It's a trial by fire for sure. I'm assuming that this server uses a custom xp script right? It's not using the standard xp slider stuff? Perhaps if you outline what it is, exactly, you're shooting for we can be of more help. Do you want advancement measured in time? In kills? If so how much/many? How steep do you want the XP drop off for characters higher than the mob? How much time/how many kills do you want the xp penalty for death to erase? Do you want the advancement rate to curve, making it quicker/easeir for low levels and more painful to higher levels? I think, while you have a great vision as a whole on this server, you're missing out here (or your not and I just don't know what the vision is). Decide all th s stuff first, then implement.

why not look in the DMG and set it as per CR Encounter rules?

why not look in the DMG and set it as per CR Encounter rules? Because that is *insanely* fast. The standard NWN2 encounter ratio in the OC is 1/10th of that outlined in the DM guide and that's way to fast. IIRC the official guide is 4 encounters per level or something like that. Remember combat in a game like this is much more common than in tabletop play. In PnP you might have multiple game sessions dedicated to a single encounter. Here you have doezens of encounters a session. EDIT: for a RP server like this I think that 5* level (capped by critter and players) is a pretty reasonable rate. It's low enough to keep leveling slower but high enought where you feel like you're getting something for your effort.

why not look in the DMG and set it as per CR Encounter rules? I think that would work for DM events, but "grinding" kills it. You normally recieve 300 x level xps per even level single monster kill. It takes 1000 x level xps to move up a level. If you do the math, you would level after killing 3 and 1/3 monsters of even level. In other words, if you have a level 1 fighter going up against a level 1 wolf, if they win, they receive 300 xps. If you could handle even level mobs throughout your career, you'd level every 4th kill.

hmm, hadn't studied it that closely, I simply took it as "if even level and thus a moderate chellenge award moderate xp, if higher CR and thus very challenging award them for it, if attacking things significantly weaker give accordingly low xp"
But anyways I agree that what you outlined would make it way too fast but right now for me it is way too slow, 1 xp per kill is terribly slow. Once im done mapping out the UD ill have nothing left to do.
