Im sure some of you remember, there was discussion of other cities a while back, and it was somewhat dismissed because of the fact that people don't visit Baldurs Gate itself much as it is. This is more about giving players a common place to rp on a regular basis, sorta, and not at all about other cities, as that discussion has long since come and gone, so keep that in mind.
I was thinking that we could give a few suggestions to anyone interested as to how we could change this. Ill start with a few of my own, and any of you with something to contribute, throw in your 2 cents and whathaveyou.
1. Perhaps a grindable area, mid level, or so, mabye a crypt underneath a persons home. Better still, make it an area with a droppable item similar to minotaurs, so that players could make money off it, or fight if the urge struck them.
2. Very similar to the first, I know, but add a one time quest in for a small, mabye 3 floor mansion mabye, nothing spectacular, perhaps something along the lines of someone reported that a theivery was going to take place and you were asked to guard the home (yea I know I suck at this quest idea thing, but you get the idea)
3. Make a more spacious area where players can gather in a circle and talk, and have some room, without a fountain in the way and all.
The first two would increase the total traffic through the area itself, while the third would give a place for that traffic, and others, to gather.
Anyways, thats about all Ive got, I leave it to you guys

The first district is being reduced in size and stuff I hear, as so not to be a drain on peoples hardware, that should help. Adding the sewer system and populate it with Dopplegangers, Spiders, thugs, Carrion Crawlers and stuff would be good. Also underneath that in the old game is the old city with a temple of Bhaal in which you have the final showdown with Sarevok, it was full of Undead. On the surface there's like three other districts that could be added to the city I think. Otherwise I think Jlf2n said he was filling out the existing areas of the server with stuff to do, people to talk to etc, in a previous post?
One thing that would make it easier to get around the city would be to add the option of traveling straight to the district you want to go from the main gate, it would also make traversing the city less of a hassle.

Actually, I think the problem of no one hanging out in the city boils down to... location. It is not centralized to where the action is, and you have have to go through three unstable transitions to get there. My solution... The Friendly Arm. An Inn centralized in the area to all the surface world areas. Would be located between the gnolls and the ogres.

Maybe the Elfsong Tavern or another place in the center of the city could be turned to the official "Looking for a party" spot. This would increase the number of people in town surely. Maybe a new tag in the map saying "Name of the Place (Party Spot)" could solve. Edit: Another Idea that was already mentioned a long time before, were the tavern games awarding xp and gold for adventurers. I don't know why that didn't go ahead but it would surely increase the number of people dwelling in the city

I tend to stay away from the city on all of my chars. Everytime I zone in the city I end up crashing. I know the devs said they are working on this so this isnt a complaint but more of a statement as why ppl dont use cities. My druid well he stays out of the city unless its necissary cause well hes a druid

In the next update the East Gate district will be cut in half. It will become 2 areas, The East Gate district and the East Harbor district. From my inital testing the load times are now on par with other exterior areas and the crashing seems to have cleared up substantially. I've learned with time you just can't build an exterior area over 16x16 in size. Currently the one in game is a 24x20 and it gives a lot of people fits.

Thanks for the info Jlf2n, I wasn't meaning to say anything bad or complain. I was just stating thats why most ppl dont frequent the city. I knew you guys were working on it and it would be great to be able to have a fun tavern to hang out in , instead of the gnoll fort lol.

Or even just use the corner of the trade way with the gnolls for this (the corner between cloak wood and orgre's). And just keep the gnolls on the other half of the map. Everyone travells through that spot.

You really do see a lot of traffic. I think once we retake the temple there we will have a perfect party spot.

^^ Thats a good Idea! I'd like to see the temple of bhaal retaken and turned into a flaming fist compound with an tavern (friendly arm) located inside for the common travelers to congregate. ** Yea I did that with Tarsakh and got to know a lot of PPl that way. It also made me think more detail on the background of my char. Now I have a home I miss seeing everyone But the home is nicer than the tent I use to sleep in.

If someday we can eventually travel north (and they are expanding north as you can see) Baldur's Gate will become more of a central location, and that will make it busier. Plus, as mentioned, sewers would add a lot to it.
I had suggested having a North Gate in the city, but that would require a lot of reworking of the maps, so I guess that's a no go.
