I am beginning to set out mobs for the Underdark and would like to hear your experiences fighting the surface monsters. If you have played both a Drow and a surface race I would like to hear how the difficulty varies.

Not that I have much of a basis for comparison, but I can say this:
LA races do poorly against melee brute monster types. Needs less of those.

Fighting gnolls at level 1 as a drow is alot of fun and the challenge rewarding, but of course making sure that there's UD themed encounters would better immerse the realm than finding the same creatures throughout the server. Perhaps at spawn, the UD races would begin in the UD, with a decently tough encounter area between the surface and UD to prevent as much going to the surface as well as those entering in. Make it a bit tough on the players individually than a massive spam of the creatures throughout.

Of course it will be different mobs in the UD but I can always rework the stats to match the gnolls. And whats LA races?

I think at least a hill-giant strength mob area between the surface and the UD will be necessary to prevent the eventual overtaking of the surface by the UD races... or one with great spot/listen scores to make sure they can't be snuck past.
How many mob areas will be in the UD when it is first launched?

I'm thinking though, my character is supposed to have left the Underdark never to return to live in the sunlit lands. Will I be forced to spawn in an Underdark location regardless?

Ok first off welcome aboard Elix/Deadman Second dont you know that the highlighted area is considered ? ? ? ? fighting and is illegal. Third I agree the underdark should be a rough place and dangerous to all.

Not necessarily a MOB, but here is an idea... theswordcoast.proboards89.com/index.cgi?board=issueswitharea&action=display&thread=1504Duplicate this "bug" and set it up as a dead-magic area that must be passed through in and out of the Underdark... Mix in some brute nasties and we will keep our worlds separated from a mass migration in either direction. It has FR Lore backing it up, as the UD is supposed to have areas of wild/dead magic, even prior to the Time of Troubles.

Defiantely UD themed, and definately challenging. Although something I might like to see is an underdark version of a giant....not just a giant placed there, but something with some cool background behind it
