Just posting a suggestion.. One of the other servers I play on has an auto xp feature that gives 50xp every 15 min or so (random) but only IF you are near other pcs, assuming that you are RPing with them. This is an awesome feature as it creates more RP, as people arent then concerned they are missing out by not running around slaughtering things, which certainly isnt always the case ICly. By giving xp more for RP, more plots and storylines are created, as more people will actually stop to talk about what has been going on, and what to do about it.

I’m not sure that I agree with the exact concept (grinding in pairs would get you xp that way, wouldn’t it?), but I do like the concept of granting XP for good RP. I don’t know how often the DMs wander about watching people, but especially lately I’ve noticed a lot of good RP that I think is just as deserving, if not a lot more deserving, than those that run from place to place slaughtering for XP. On that note, I don’t know if event rewards are tied to RP performance during the events.. but I think there is a stark contrast between some players that I think could be rewarded as well.
I think it would encourage more involvement in the plot lines, the guilds, and the server in general. There are a few pretty low level characters out there that are some of the most fun to RP with.
That said, I’m thrilled this server is as fun as it is, RP XP or not!

I know some servers that have the ability, and its a good thing...
But it also has a major flaw.
Its hard to tell weither someones just rping or standing next to someone.
So I could say stand next to someone whos afk and get xp.
HUGE exploint if you ask me.
I have suggested that the DM-PC's be given a wand to hand out XP when we are player side like most servers do but we havent realyl started discussing it.
I dont know how the others feel about it but I've given my two cents.

Yeah I'd like to see that as well... Even if the reward was relatively minor compared to event xp, anything would encourage RP and a more immersive world. I've logged in the past few nights too late to get in on any events, but have instead RP'd with a few groups.. it doesnt get me XP but I think it's brought a couple more people into the plot lines.

earthsong, Auto RP XP is a great idea but both previous posters brought up a good point. I also came from such a server which also noted whether you were in combat or not. It was not uncommon to find people sitting next together and AFK in some type of group meditation. Anyway, I for one, will be making it a point to wander around every so often to check on RP. Although I won't penalize or tongue-lash for OOC chatter (I do it when I'm a player too), I will reward for consistency of it. For those that have been in my events, I even give bonus xp for intelligent tactics (i.e. blockading a door with a statue, ambushing an ambusher, etc.) that doesn't involve bashing someone head on. Ideally speaking, people will RP normally whether or not a DM is on and will do it just because it's fun. I think that's why people play this game instead of something like WoW. Anyway, I like your thoughts on RP XP but doing it via engine may be too difficult to implement. Keep up the recommendations though.

I think it would be exploited too much. But on the part about rewarding RP with XP I completely agree. When I'm on, if I catch people doing RP I'll give them some bonus XP.

I like what they did on another of my servers. Which was DM's awarding players for rping with xp.

How many DMs actively do this? I can tell you that I play at least once a day, RP when Im on, and have yet to receive any RP xp.
We had an event for about 2.5 hours at least last night that was heavy, heavy RP with very little XP gained through battle and we were given 600xp for it. While I had fun, and appreciate the xp given, you can see how this makes RPing rather less productive than grinding...

Keep in mind looking through all the areas that there are on the server, taking care of all the rebuild, relevel requests, the countless questions that are asked, port times to jump from area to area, crashes, doing events, and taking care of whatever else needs to be done makes it rather hard to stop and watch RP sometimes. I do it when I can, but more often than not I'm busy doing something else.

I know man, and I am really not blaming you or any DM.. you guys do a good job... but by pointing that out I was hoping to show that RP XP as a manual process was not working currently.
I could grind for 3 hours and go up a level or I could RP for 3 hours and get 5-600 xp. Yeah, I have more fun RPing but how many people are really going to choose to do that? And then where does that leave the level of RP on our server?
And while we are at it, lets PLEASE not adjust XP downwards. That, combined with the lack of substantial RP XP, will really promote grinding by making it even harder on the RPers.
Just my .02!

I could grind for 3 hours and go up a level or I could RP for 3 hours and get 5-600 xp. 5-600 XP for three hours RP? An event? That had to be Ice!

I've been kind of lacking on doing this but take note that I'll be giving xp for in-character forum posts. I'm actually going through some bios now to track who's been writing RP stories.
And yeah, RP XP isn't always going to consistent (different DMs) and they won't always be constant (DM's aren't omniscient) but there isn't a whole lot of middle ground that can be met. A timer for RP XP has been mentioned but unless the glaring disadvantages (and exploits) can be plugged, it's not very viable either. Ideally, we (as a community) can get our thoughts off of grinding for the sole purpose of leveling and just RP for the sake of it. For one, I'd recommend making a PC-build to be fun and viable at level 15-20 and RP the rest of the way up. It takes a lot longer but makes for a richer character. There's plenty of log ins where Nahum just RP'ed a whole session and never got a single xp point for it. The reward was in keeping Nahum "alive" and involved in the world despite the PC's the grind through and past him.
PS: I've been known to give xp for awesome RP while in player mode. (I have to log in as DM first of course) I haven't been doing it lately or consistently, but I'll be more mindful to keep a pen and pad handy next time for xp I owe for good and consistent RP.

Lol, yeah it was Ice.. and it was a good time.. but it serves as an example of the disparity of grinding (whether grouped or solo) and actually trying to bring stories and plotlines to live on this server.
On one hand ya got people running, killing, running, killing, ad infinitum.. they are lvl 20 in a couple weeks.
On the other hand you have people advancing plots, talking, interacting and building story arcs that bring the server alive... and they never reach 20.
Thats all Im sayin!
ON EDIT: Boo hoo, whaaa, and yes I want cheese with my wine. (just gettin that outta the way.. ha ha)

Ahh i remember the good old PnP days when i used to spent 3-4 hours on a quest and get the xp in the end of it, and lvling up really....really.....slow. Like 3 or 4 days of adventure in RL time, 3-4 hours each session, to get another lvl. Made value each point of xp, each lvl (So much you have no idea) and each time i had to RP something. And its so exciting to get a new lvl slowly, makes you enjoy each lvl and its dificulties. When you lvl up too fast you dont even know or dont even use certain skills you have, cause quickly you get a new one. Loses the history of the character a bit. Its kinda weird to see a character today, and tomorrow see a demi-god. Imo its bad for RP. Makes my character feel like a fish sometimes, with zero long-term memory. Lol, its like each day you meet the same person, they're not the same anymore. Makes them a bit shallow if you ask me. But thats just me....each player plays as they see fit of course. But just to remember something: When you see the legendary characters in the FR lore, they are not all epic. Some are mid lvl, and its not the super-high xp that makes them legendary or cool, or even alive(Alive as in being quoted by others) in the FR world, is the unique characteristics they have and unique looks, history and on and on. They are so famous because they are a part of the world you are reading about. They were part of important events or have done important deeds, that matter for the FR Lore, not simply because they are magicaly-over-uber-super-mega powerful and with one Terabite of xp. This is a character that i want. Not then one that can kill every dragon in Faerun, but one that could be easily quoted in a novel, and people would look at them and smile, wishing they were there when those events happened. Not because he could beat down everything easy, but because he couldnt, but he did anyway, with a huge amount of drama and hard choices! AHA! Zeal

While I agree with all that, leveling an RP'd character slowly while the multitudes around you are on a fast-track to godhood makes the game less fun (for me at least)... using your example of PnP playing, how fun would it have been if the DM of your group gave one guy a new level every session while you inched your way up? If we rewarded RP on a consistent basis perhaps it would encourage more RP.. thats all. And yeah, Sheritomo is a probably a good example of a mid-level character that is well RP'd, that has been around a while, and people recognize on this server.
