I need some ideas for a kick butt starting area. I like the ship one but the camera is always messed up when you log in and that could be problematic for new players. I think we will use it for the ship quests instead.
So I want to move it to a simple interior area but I need an idea on how to make it as cool as possible.
Any ideas?

Why don't you take a page from EQ2 and start new players on Balduran's Isle?
You could setup a "small" island with some NPCs and a few starter quests to get people used to the game and they can build up perhaps to level 2 or 3 before journey to Faerun at Baldur's Gate.
I myself had a similar idea and had new players start at an island where they could perform a few minor quests meet new players and stuff before heading to Baldur's Gate. They get to meet a captain who will also be used for ship travels from Baldur's Gate to Neverwinter, Water Deep, etc. They also got to meet a few NPCs who were also on the boat ride; who will offer some quests in Baldur's Gate.
The quests I had set up who mostly kill X amount of these with one "major" baddy on the island in a cave, which could be left alone.
In order to leave the island a new player must complete no less than the captain's 3 quests than he can leave, or the player could stay and complete 1 quest each from the other passengers.
However after that I than allowed players to just head to Baldur's Gate if they wished by just talking to the captain and selecting the response that would get them to the city now.

People is assumed to be newcomers to the town, right? Make them start at the Customs Office of the Port Authority. Be interrogated by the Fist, so you can introduce the faction.
I don't think you should keep people out of the main zones at all. Let them populate the world, and roleplay early not only among them, but with everyone. So no, no newbie-only zone for me, which also would be really boring when you make a character again.

Could we have multiple start points? It would be great if drow, durgar and deep gnomes started in the underdark. Elves could start in a forest or smth and humans could start in an office, like said above or a village...

It would be possible to have multiple start points, by my knowledge of the toolset. You would have an NPC to speak to (similar to the priest) at the starting point (because you can only start in one place) that takes you to your race's starting point on the map.
I do think that the ship is fascinating. A customs and Fist interrogation would be a great idea, as posted above. By the way, I've been trying to make walkable ship decks in my modules, how exactly do you do that?

I like the idea of a customs office for those coming in by port to Baldur's Gate - there is a level of realism in that.
I am in favor of the multiple starting positions dependant on race and certain other characteristics.
Overall though - I think we should have our players zone into an OOC area first - have the rules and requirements listed there for all to see. At that point they could decide their chosen deity and languages and then be asked to step into the portal that will take them into the game world.
This portal could be scripted to determine which starting point is most appropriate for the character that is passing through it. Could be an area deep in the UD, Far beyond Nashkel or the standard port entrance through BG.
Everything is possible.

On one of the Nwn PW's I gamed on they had what was called "The Lobby" at login . It was a basic area where people could all meet and then there were several doors in the lobby that would take you to a different area in the world . It was a nice way for players to arrange a gaming session and all take off from one central location .. This could be made to look however ya wanted it to as well , instead of a closed room full of random doors .. just throwing out some ideas ...

If people are to start in an OOC area, then maybe they could be greeted by a famous NPC from the BG series. Evil PC's have to put up with Edwin, good ones meet Minsc and so on. It is a silly idea but at least I can now say I attempted to make a contribution.
