after countless months of trying to think up a decent sailing system, it came to me last night through what i can only call divine inspiration.
once you get onto your ship, a conversation appears listing all the possible destinations. each destination has a different chance of running into hostiles/pirates along the way. if it turns out that a hostile is going to be encountered, another conversation appears with two options: flee or fight. if you choose to fight, you go to a preset area with two ships with a boarding plank in between them. after the fight, another conversation opens with options to head back to the port you came from, head to the closest port, or to continue on to your destination.
if you choose to flee, you make a survival(?) check to see if you gain ground or if the hostile catches up. the first to happen 3 times determines the outcome. if you fail 3 times, you have to fight, if you succeed 3 times you successfully get away.
this would handle the job of any fast travel, while keeping the destinations limited and not without risk during travel. it also seems logical that this would be the most likely method of travel along the sword coast. eventually i hope to expand on this idea to include the possibility of PC pirates and such, but right now i'm just keeping the base simple.
any feedback would be helpful, as this is just a prototype idea at the moment.

I think that would be an awesome idea if it can be placed in! Some other things you might consider is price of destination and will the ship sailors/guards and such aid in the fight should you have to. I know you said your keeping is at base right now, so, Very Kewl Idea!!

I don't see how this can be done because the ship screen would just be one area. So if alot of people were doing this all at once then you would just have a bunch of people in the ship fight area with everyone yelling "How the hell you get on my ship?!?" With replies "Your ship?!? This is my ship." The only way you can really do ship travel is if you make a harbor master that players can talk to. They talk to him he asks them where they want to go then he charges them a little bit of money and they load that map and go there.

Um, no, they could all be in the same ship, why not? Actually a very good opportunity to RP, if any of you has played Everquest, ships where real fun and you often made new friends.
Imagine a ship, that covers the travel from city A to B.
this ship is a zone, if two guys are on it, it means they're on the same ship. Why not?
When it's on harbor on town A (5 minutes), you can come on board - off board by talking to the appropiate NPC or clicking on the appropiate zone.
Same on B
When it's sailing (10 minutes), you can't go anywhere. Launch here random events if you like them, like the mentioned pirates, shipwrecks on an isle, etc.

Just thought that you were maybe trying to implement a fast travel system into the game, so a 10-15 minutes delay wouldn't really be fast travel. But do you really want fast travel, friends? because I don't.

They talk to him he asks them where they want to go then he charges them a little bit of money and they load that map and go there. this would require a little tinkering, but could be worked around. it would require an option at departure to take your own ship, or to tag along on someone elses. of course, there would have to be a time limit on how long after the owner of the ship left that you could join him/her. it would also require that several ships are set up, instead of only one set. if one ship is already occupied, it would just put you on the next one down the line. for lack of a better term, it would be "faster travel", not the instantaneous teleportation of the OC. it would still take some time, but it would still be faster than walking. also, it would only take you from one port to another, instead of being able to poof around to wherever you want via a world map.

One thing.
It should be impossible to board a ship if there is a hostile creature (or PC) nearby. This way running away via ship won't be possible.

Me and Lorgin and a few others have spoke about this before. It has a lot of potential. Players probably won't be able to own there own ships, but still traveling and fighting by ship will be fun.
Ship voyages to tropical islands, Chult, Amn, the Moonshaes, even cities like Waterdeep with Undermountain become available when you can sail. Its easy to make the water run by a ship. Maybe we can make an area thats just a ship on the water. You port to it and then talk to another person to port to your final destination. This way the people that want to hurry up the process can and those who want to stay on and make it seem like a long voyage can as well.
