I think the idea of making it an "alternate universe" is a cheap cop out. At least to a serious Trekkie like myself. And don't tell me that almost every Star Trek episode/movie dealt with time warps and alternate timelines. In all of those scenarios they make it back to their respective paths. To me the new Star Trek movie may as well be called Star Trek: Lost Transformers. EDIT: But I'll still probably go see it

My husband and I watched it and by the last 30 minutes, I had a perma-grin on my face and was doing everything I could to keep from dancing in my seat. Zealote's review says it best. The movie was perfect!

As a die hard tekkie fan, aside from memorizing the Klingon language, I would have to say the new Trek was AMAZING!!!!
Any of you haters out there that think otherwise, I have already spoken with the DMs and DEVS on this site and they have agreed to ban any and all who oppose our humble but accurate opinions of the movie's awesome juice of love.

[For your skimming pleasure, main points are underlined]
Some background info: I am a non-trekkie, though when I was a bit younger I did end up enjoying the Next Generation and Voyager series that were *forced* on me... due to the whole "There's One TV in the House" issue. Watched a bunch of the original series (come on, it' just plain funny to watch now), and some Deep Space 9 which never grew on me. Side note: Seven of Nine... I wanted to be the six to her nine. Giggidy, giggidy.
That being said, when I saw the preview for the movie, I instantly thought "Oh great, Fast and the Furious, Space Edition. *sarcastically says* Yeah... love to see it... *barfs.*
Well power went out at my house last night due to thunderstorms in Mississippi and living in Bum-f***-nowheresville, USA. Went to the movies to kill some time (they still had power) and Star Trek was the only thing starting in the next 2 hours.
(Relunctanlty) saw it and loved it. The original Star Trek had the plot and dialogue of two monkeys mating at the zoo. The movie had some fantastic and occasionally witty dialogue with some throw-back quality quotes mixed in. "Damn it Jim, I'm a doctor not a _____!" Well done! The effects were naturally better than any past Trekkie movie and made it far more enjoyable. I'd give it an 8 out of a 10, and comparing it to past Trekkie movies/series I'd say it's the best they've made hands down.
