I was playing the other night. No parties seemed to be forming as it was a weeknight. My character is a 16th lvl Ranger/Thief. I decided to explore the areas south of Beregost. I ended up fighting the giants solo. They were rated as easy. After a tough fight I managed to kill one of them, but it cost me 8-10 Kits and 3 potions of cure critical wounds. The exp was 62 for the one giant that I killed. I really enjoy events and party adventures, but sometimes soloing is fun. I had to sneak around and finally fight one of the giants one on one. I defeated him, but I would not do it again, as the exp and no treasure were menial compared to the actual fight. I would not do any solo play with the expectations that it might work me towards 17th level. Like I said I enjoy DM events the most, but even though my character did not die, it was futile adventuring in those areas as the wyverns yielded 7 exp each on the map one north of the giants.

Head north past the fields of dead, and fight the mountain ogres, trolls, and stone giants if you dare.
You'll get xp there, but you should probably be really really fast or brave.

Soloing giants at level 16 just isn't very effective for most builds. If I am playing a weak build, umberhulks and bugbears are choice material. For a strongly built PC, I would prefer deathknights.
Though oftentimes I do not solo for the purpose of gaining xp anyway. Some characters are just fun to play travel around the PW with. If it's fun to go against a challenging mob, then why not do it? I much prefer to have fun playing than stress about reaching the next level.

It all depends on the amount of AC you can stack on yourself. My druid is level 15 and with all her buffs in Tree plant shape, she is able to push 37 AC (sometime only 34?) and my pet is able to push 37 AC as well. Thus, the giants have a seemingly hard time hitting me which makes it easy for me to solo them (although it is very boring with no chests :-P)
