If we're gunna have such long rests can it like Halve the rest time or just not reset the hours if your awakened by a spawning mob or a person joining the party?

The one thing that annoys me is when mobs spawn right in front of me during rest, interrupting me. My character can track enemies across the map, yet he didn't see the orc that just popped into existence in front of him? Ridiculous. It would be great of mobs didn't spawn within a certain distance of players.

If no one else is fighting in the region I generally wait for 20 seconds or so then rest on the edge of a map. Interruptions usually occur only if I get in a hurry and skip such precautions.

It would be great of mobs didn't spawn within a certain distance of players. Your character is resting, thus it is possible for an orc to get past your superior tracking skills.

That explanation doesn't work in a party where one person is resting and the others are not, though.

Well, in that case, the one keeping the watch might have fallen asleep. Or just stared at one direction in his or her thoughts, thus effectively dulling the senses, allowing a monster sneak up on you.

That's all excuses though. I wouldn't have a problem with it if a survival roll was made when resting, and if failed, a couple of mobs would be spawned. But as it is now, it's simply a somewhat too simple spawn script in action that doesn't take into account if players are too close.
After all, I've seen enemies spawn right in front of me when I wasn't resting as well. Again, how could my character possibly miss that with a near-epic survival skill and epic detection skills?

You just had a bad roll and the monster did not. (Which is another way of saying those excuses.)
It is annoying when you are on low health, almost reaching the tunnel exit and wham, out of the thin air comes out another monster. Your character who was so close, so damn close, is now crushed to goo and made part of the stew.
It is not hard to image the person behind the screen saying; "fugue" with an exclamation mark to boot.

There are no critical successes/failures on skill rolls in DnD, and there's no way an orc could come even close to sneaking up on my char with 30 ranks of listen. And yeah, it's still just an excuse; survival or other skills has nothing to do with it, it's just a somewhat too simple script.

Depends on house rules. Critical failure or success on skill rolls does make things far more realistic.
And I can make up excuses all day why your character would fail the save. Next time, don't listen to the birds singing. ;D

The point is that resting in those places is dangerous and the monsters shouldn't have to quit coming so you can get your beauty sleep.

Agreed. However, since there are no "safe" areas in our near our combat zones, whereas you could normally find one in the woods, we get launched into this whole conversation where the people who want extreme rp expound on the illogic of resting there argue against the people who expound on the logical conclusion that they should be able to rest without running all the way back to the road, which ALSO has monsters on it, so you run all the way back to Baldur's Gate...what Im trying to say is, this is an online RPG, we work with what we have, and one of those things does not happen to be a safe place to rest. So on a more serious note than my aforementioned comment, I think that it is a valid comment that sometimes monsters spawn out of thin air in front of players and interrupt their resting.
That said, I also dont think that it is a large enough problem to be dealt with right this instant, but perhaps at a later date when more serious things have been worked out.
