This is a thought and something I'd always love to see on PW RP servers. 1) Big cities like Baldur's Gate and other places always seem to have townspeople- But! - The townspeople are souless dolls that stand in place or have a small back and forth wander habit. I'd love to see more people(unless it causes lag) such as crowded streets filled with commoners, guards, adventurers, strange groups like maybe a group of well-dressed elves visiting on business and crowded city markets where people scream about selling fancy bowls and such(idk just throwing stuff out) 2) Random Encounters as in every few days or so a random generated party of either good or evil adventurers spawn and simply walk through the area killing monsters (or perhaps players =o) How neat would it be to be walking along the road and see a painfully stereotypical party such as a Human, Elf, Dwarf, and Female walking down the road? Or random Bandit Spawns such as in Baldur's gate 1 where they'd ambush you and kick you in the head until you were dead =P These are just a few of my thoughts to assist in the immersion in the game, I find RP to be much easier and even contagious among non-rpers if the game is immerse enough.. Discuss?

Well, as a DM I do take control of townspeople and such to RP with. I even have my own cast of characters you may meet if you are in town. But the sad fact is hardly anyone ever spends more time in town than to rush in and out of the shop so it is a rarity that I ever do this.
As far as putting in too many people, I think that would cause lag.

I noticed too that nobody spends any amount of time in town =/
I've tried several times but most people rush past you or theres nobody at all but that white haired commoner who doesn't say anything xD

Reason people dont spend time in town much is the problems crashing between zones. Bergost and candle keep are nice though.

My opinion is that if you want atmosphere, you'll have to create it yourself. Or at least the groundwork for it. Everyone on this server are using cities as pit-stops between quests. I've wandered around Baldurs Gate and Beregost for hours with a couple of my PCs and the encounters I've had with players that involved anything more than seeing a person running from Sorcerous Sundries/Maltz's to the gate can be counted on one hand. When I moved to the bridge however, things started to shape up a bit and I actually got in contact with several entertaining characters. My presence seemed to spark more interaction too, as people stopped to listen to me, they got involved with conversations with each other as well and at one point, a Fist officer actually tried to disperse the crowd as we were obstructing the bridge Point being, if you want to things to happen in the city, don't expect the DMs to possess a character just because you stop up for a few moments. I'm sure they've seen plenty of people run through it without a second thought to NPCs, possesed or not. Instead, get a few friends (or random people) together and decide to spend some time in the city, RP'ing. Chances are if a DM is on and not busy elsewhere, they'll notice the action (especially if you happen to drop a line or two about it ) and come join the fun. I'd certainly be interested in joining a sort of "Breakfast Club" and get together in the Elfsong, or Blade And Stars or whatnot and do some laid back, social roleplaying instead of all the "right, let's go kill these foul beasts" in-between-kills RP

I usually play fairly late (9pm-Midnight CT or so) and sometimes its like pulling teeth to get very many people together.

I'm at GMT+1 myself and mostly play weekends and evenings (when I can get away with). need to have some "sewer" section under the towns where adventurers could go and do some local expeditions. It has worked very well in 2 other PW's I was staff on.

Yeah, I'd love to see a sewer system. What would make it even cooler was to have sewers under the city, leading to rougher tunnels under the farms and wolves, and an opening into the 2nd level of the hilltop ruins.
It would let the skulkin types get in and out of town.

A sewer system! We completely left that out of the classic Baldur's Gate city. Since my mindset has been so incredibly underground for so long, I suppose a sewer system might be a nice future project after the Underdark. I'll have to talk to Josh about that one.
That would definitely increase traffic in towns.

Sewer sounds like an amazing idea as Baldur's Gate does have an awesome sewer system but I was talking about making the areas such as the city look a tad livelier so it actually looks like your in a city instead of a ghost town.
