To the commanding officer of the Flaming Fist,
It is my obligation to inform you about an urgent matter, and thus I hope you will find the time to examine this case thoroughly.
It was today afternoon when I and an aquitance of mine were on our way southwards to Beregost. Accidentally we met a few other travellers on the Tradeway, only a few miles away from the abandoned stronghold between Baldur´s Gate and Beregost. What happened after that was confusing and chaotic, but I will try my best to reproduce these happenings in every detail, for it could become important someday.
A black dark cloud emerged, yet it concentrated on a single point a few steps away from us. All I could make out was a slightly manshaped figure, which was seeming to stand in the center of the cloud. It shouted something, which I cannot repeat in the exact wording, but it taunted us and called us "fools to think to achieve anything by gather in such groups".
We asked him to show himself, but he disappeared together with the cloud, just to appear behind us and disappear again like a ghost. But as the cloud did not follow him, we could get a glance at his clothes, which were recognized by me and several others as the robes worn by the red wizards of Thay. We did not have further time to try to learn the reason for all this, as the wizard started to fiercly attack us with a wide and powerful variation of spells, from which many of us, including myself, were severly injured and it would not have needed much more and our lives would have ended this very day.
When I regained consciousness, the wizard had disappeared and an old man, wearing red robes (yet not of the sort I have ever seen on a Red Wizard, as I suspected first) and a big pointed hat was standing right in front of us. He did not give away his name, insted calling himself a "friend" and warning us, that this attack is but one in a greater plan of the Red Wizards, a plan which he called the "Wizard Hunt" and he claimed to know that the Red Wizards fear a newly rising magic school in Baldurs´Gate.
Also, he told us that we were attacked because wizards were amongst us, which would mean that every magic wielder is currently in danger.
He also warned us not to face any Red Wizard alone, then he disappeared again, saying he has still others to warn in the region of Waterdeep.
While I know that the words of strangers, who are not even ready to reveal their name let alone where he aquired his information, are to be treated with general mistrust, yet I wrote down what I remembered of this encounter, because it cannot be an accident that this particular stranger appeared right after an attack, and I wanted to reproduce every detail.
I reported this to you because, if there is truth in the words of the stranger, and up until now the facts support his statement, the magic wielders and citizens in Baldur´s Gate and the surroundings are possibly in severe danger.
