Hello, I'm Cataclysm and my character is Verros Urran. I decided to make my first post something useful instead of just the oft-ignored "I'm this and that" in the introduction thread.
I'm well aware that most role players take on the role of heroes, brave, cunning, strong or wise defenders of the realm and indeed, that's what D&D is basically built for. The server itself pits them against a host of monsters and challenges for them to go all hero on.
However, beating up mobs all day gets old quickly and doesn't make for very interesting RP which is why some players decide to play villains.
I've decided to dedicate this thread to discussing these oft-unappreciated antagonists who often make the RP world much more complex, intriguing and ultimately fun.
To get the ball rolling, here are my 2 cents:
In my opinion, RPing a villain isn't just about picking an evil alignment, wearing all the black and spikes you can find and being as obviously mean and evil as you can. IMO such villainy, unless masterfully executed, is rather cliche, bland, and usually ends up with the (vastly more numerous) good and neutral players ganging up and dispatching the villain.
The way I see it, evil =\= mean. In fact, the most dangerous villain is the one you consider your friend right up until the point where you found all your secrets have been betrayed, your allies assassinated and your "trusted companion" holding a knife to your throat. In my eyes good villainy takes ingenuity, creativity and a lot of misleading, deceiving and outright lying.
In short, a big hulking wicked warrior who likes to hit things = boring, a secret insidious cabal working to bring down the realm from within = interesting and engaging.
Thought? Comments? Your own villainous methods? Feel free to disagree with me and discuss, I just want to see where this discussion goes
