Listed below are some of the numerous factions and groups that make their home along the Sword Coast. At some point most if not all of these factions will be joinable by the PCs.
THE FLAMING FIST
One of the largest of the mercenary companies currently active, the Flaming Fist is usually based in Baldurs Gate, where its commander Eltan is a Duke. The Fist has a good record of achievements, particularly when operating against other mercenary companies.
THE MERCHANTS LEAGUE
Based in Baldurs Gate, is an organization that promotes merchant safety through good roads, road patrols and defensible waytowers, and strong, well-run and well-guarded caravans.
The League is a rival to both the Merchant-Kings of Amn and the newlyformed Iron Throne, and runs many caravans under guard for small independent caravan masters, for very reasonable
fees. Prominent members of the League are Irlentree, Zorl Miyar,
and Aldeth Sashenstar. All are successful merchants themselves, who res
ide in Baldurs Gate. The League is an organization
in decline, however; the rise of the various costers is replacing its functions and sapping its traditional support.
THE RED WIZARDS
The Red Wizards are the masters of Thay, and the would be magical overlords of Faerun. They focus on a school of magic more intently than any specialist, achieving incredible mastery of magic within a very narrow focus. Seen as cruel and evil tryants across Toril, some choose to leave the region and asume a more secret identity in a distant land.
THE HARPERS
The Harpers are a secret society dedicated to holding back evil, preserving knowledge, and maintaining the balance between civilization and the wild. The organization is often times believed to be lead by Elminster the Mage. The Harpers usually operate in secret, alone or in small groups.
THE CULT OF THE DRAGON
The Cult of the Dragon is a secret society dedicated to bringing about the "inevitable" rule of Faerun by undead dragons. Founded by the mad arch-mage (and later lich) Sammaster.
The Cult is broken down in cells, and each cell has a hierarchy of individuals. The most important members of the cult are wizards, particularly necromancers. Typical clerics worship Bane, Shar, Talos, Talona, or Velsharoon.
THE THIEVES GUILD
The Thieves guild of Baldur's Gate is secret organization of criminals and pick pockets. Little is known about this organization other than that the leader goes by the name Ravenscar.
THE KNIGHTS OF THE SHIELD
A lesser know sinister group of nobles and merchants.
THE KNIGHTS OF THE UNICORN
A whimsical group of adventurers who spend as much time making merry as raiding dungeons. They worship the Unicorn of the Beast Cults of the north.
THE IRON THRONE
A new merchant organization that has popped up on the Sword Coast. The Iron Throne is an evil and sinister group bent on total domination of Baldur's Gate and the Sword coast.
