If a person is that good, then let them have the XP, because most people arent that good... I know it would be a lot of work, but to solve all of this the traditional *set xp* would work very well...all goblins are 5xp, all wolfweres are 2000xp, divided equally amonst the party (or scale it to the levels of the party, highest level gets the most xp) That way a high level character can still progress without having to slay thousands of monsters per level, and the lower level wouldnt get 300,000 xp (I want that!) for a higher level kill.

I remember on a NWN1 PW I used to play where one of the characters killed a Black Dragon farrrr above her level. It was quite a feat, but the way the XP worked on there when she killed it (she was a Druid/Shifter 21st) because of the CR difference she got about 300,000xp for it! In essence bringing her from 21st level to about 36th I believe.. I think if you were to make XP relevent to CR you would have many such scenerios with an player skilled in what they do (Fighter/Mage/Eldritch_Knights in particular!). 300000 xp is just stupid. You can't gain that much XP from one monster. Maybe a demipower or a deity perhaps... not a single dragon.

. . . Um yeah no. . . First off a low level character stands no chance up against anything much higher than it. Low AC, Low AB, 1 attack a round, No magical Gear, No DR penetration. Just getting to anything challenging would be a feat in its own. You will never see anything giving higher than MAYBE 100 XP. Its way to damn high. In theory if everyone where some goody-to-shoes and killed a couple things a day at most then RPed, it would be great. But once someone sees those numbers they do a few things. . .
A) Leave the server in fear of Monty Haul set-ups and blistering fast leveling. B) Keep grinding till they are level 30 in an hour, then kill everyone on the server, then leave. C) Get bored of the server because things are to easy for them, then leave. D) Lower challenging monsters would never get used because higher give insane XP.
Those are your options and none end well at all. Trust me their are reasons you dont see servers like that lol. -Ice

I could picture maybe having say some boss creatures that have high amounts of XP...maybe spawn once per day...oh wait a minute a legendary dragon would make more sense in a DM quest anyways...a respawning boss creature of legend would be cheesey and lose immersiveness and the specialness of the encounter the second time I see it...I see your point.

A solution to the 300,000 xp problem would be to cap the maximum xp allowed for a single kill. If the multiplier tried to hand out a ridiculously high xp reward, the cap would reduce it to something along the lines of 10% of what is needed to advance to the next level.
So if that character mentioned were to kill a dragon, she would probably have ended up with 10,000 or so points.
I think that low level characters do advance too fast. My pc made it to level five in a couple of days. Three more days (and lots of grinding) put him close to level 8. It is now at the point though, where I will have to spend around five hours killing things non-stop to advance a level. Slower level progression at the early stages, and faster progression at the higher levels would even things up a bit and make the game more fun.
