I was discussing the use of helmets with Mithari and I had an idea. Whether this is a realistic thing to ask or not, I don't know, my knowledge of computers is limited but, could it be that simply wearing a helmet offered some protection? I was thinking of a one in twenty (5%) chance of avoiding a critical hit, as a head blow would be pretty critical in most cases. Hopefully this would result in more warriors wearing a helmet in battle. I know many do but, some don't and honestly, a warrior without a helmet in battle would very soon be a dead warrior.
Also, this would mean that characters wearing full face helmets wouldn't automatically come under suspicion. Besides, surely crippling shyness is more common than sneaky Underdark races hiding themselves behind armour? Just an idea. I hope you like it.

As i recall, the helmets in the original Baldur's Gate game did something similar to this.

As i recall, the helmets in the original Baldur's Gate game did something similar to this. i'm pretty sure that the ones in BG2 negated crits, but they didn't help you against a backstab. now, if you're immune to crits, you're immune to sneak attacks too, so it's a lot more powerful of an ability. if it were only a 5% avoidance chance, it would be ok though, i don't know if they've included a percentage with the crits in NWN2's toolset. i'm pretty sure it's all or nothing, unless they changed it through the patches.

I agree that helmets should have some use to them. Right now they are used for decoration or disguise. Of course, even if helmets were to be useful as a piece of armor, there would probably be those "tough" fighters who refuse to use them.

As is probably easy to figure out, I would very much like to see some reason for it too. Then, perhaps, I can stop making the obvious point of "Why am I wearing a helmet? Why are you *not* wearing one you suicidal lunatic?".

Well, they could add 1 to the armor mod or something, but at the same time they should give -1 or something to Listen and Spot. But again, a Full Plate should prevent you from running all the time, or at least slow you down, but it doesnt, so....

Lol not because of the weight, but because of the metal parts that restrain your movement. Which is also the reason they only give you +1 from dex

It's hard enough being a rogue, whatever sort of 'extra' that people are clammoring for, I hope it is not something that prevents sneak attacks in any way. Its about all we got.
There ARE some helmets in the game that give you a +2 Deflection.. I use one with a few characters.
Maybe if there werent so many drow running around with robes and visored helms it wouldnt be a prob! You have to admit, if you seen someone with their helmet on ALL the time (sometimes for days on end in events) ya might get a wee bit curious.
Not saying all drow are played that way, but a good share of them draw the attention to themselves.

As designed in the module, the roads are very dangerous. Monsters can come running at any time, searching for gold, prey or both. As long as you're on the open roads, I think the policy of being prepared at all times is very much the safest one.
Events are a little odd though, since it's hard to say if they're in real-time or game-time.

Yeah I know.. and really with having only a few limited choices for helms, I know it can be rough...
I actually caught one in the open at Maltz's without a helm, but I assumed they were newer so after giving them some obligatory crap I told them to buy one quick and head for the hills.. lol. Man thats gotta suck.
Hopefully when the UD is complete we wont have to deal with it anymore (UD or surfacers).. when the drow are about they wont have to worry about hiding themselves quite so much.
Can't wait!

well honestly, suspecting someone of beeing a drow entirely because you see them wear a helmet all the time, is metagaming.
The helmet symbolises a diguise, the game hinders your options for diguise. When you as a player see someone with a helmet on, you draw upon your RL knowledge and figures its a drow, NOT your characters knowledge.
That is just my oppinion of course...

But if your character has unmasked a drow in the past.. and the character with the mask if obviously evil.. it doesnt take a metagamer to conclude that said person is likely not up to any good.
Is there a way to see how many drow we have on the server right now anyway? I swear I see a couple everytime I login and it isnt always the same ones. Last night I saw 3. Its a wee bit ridiculous.
