It's RP optional. That's what BG is. Whether that means RP lite, RP medium, or RP heavy. . . well, who can say. And to me, it doesn't much matter. As long as it continues to be roleplay optional, it's all semantics.
Until it's password protected and application only, you'll continue to get a wide variety of players that come here for no other reason than the 50+ players online that Gamespy reports.
Until you've got both players and DM's ready to start banning people, you'll just have to deal with the fact that the server is heavily populated with a wide variety of gamers.
As for the people that level up quickly then act tough. . . that should be a known factor on a server like this. It should not come as a surprise. If it does, the problem is you, not the server. You come here, find something you don't like, and hope to change it more to your liking by posting on the boards. A vocal minority can certainly effect change on this type of server, but the question is whether or not you should.
I tend to just build very powerful builds and spend a fair bit of time leveling them up so that I don't have to complain about other people. If they mess with me, I'm well prepared to deal with them. I find that a more elegant solution than forcing the world in question to be the way I want it to be.
I, myself, am about ready to throw in the towel just to keep my computer running for a little while longer. All the hard resets I'm forced to do between phase 1 and phase 2 of "area updates" is really killing it for me. But apparently it's people that run by me on the road that I should be concerned with. . .
I'm fine with any sort of roleplay designation BG becomes, myself. Just need to be careful what you wish for, in my experience.

It's all in the eyes of the beholder... but many people cry out for a higher level of maturity and role-play. How about that!?
Back in the day I was affiliated to a nwn1 server which regularly has 50+ players online, and they were role-players indeed. Because people simply adhered to the rules you did not see names like: Apocalypse, Phantom, Sah'tan (phonetically identical with Satan), Azrael...(and the list goes on and on...).
Names like that is what bothers me the most about BG because I find it difficult to take the otherwise wonderful setting of the PW seriously.
Others are more concerned about powerbuilding and various other things, but as I said, it's all in the eyes of the beholder.
However, back to the point, many people voice their opinion that roleplay should be enforced, so to speak, rather than optional. With optional you get the players who does not take the rules seriously, who ninja loot, metagames and what not, and I know from experience that it is possible to do without them - and still have a populated server.
It's role-players stating that these players are a bad influence on them, not the other way around. Isn't it, per definition, to ruin someone else's gaming experience by not adhering to the rules which you must to prevent the very same?

Phantom... Names like that is what bothers me the most about BG because I find it difficult to take the otherwise wonderful setting of the PW seriously as the guy who plays phantom, i feel i gotta defend the naming choice a bit. he has an actual name, and a fully detailed backstory all the way down to his childhood best friend. i've been playing him for about a decade. so he's had plenty of time to be fleshed out. the name itself is a more of a codename type of deal. however, any knowledge of his actual name and background is basically privileged information, and can only be learned when it is earned. no, it isn't an easy task. i can only think of 2 people who have been given that clearance in the entire year i've been here. i've played him on several very strict rp servers in 1, and no one had a problem with his name. especially once those people actually interacted with him. he's not some shallow character who was named on the spot because it sounded cool. ask anyone who actually knows him. he's earned his dues. he's the most well developed character i've ever played.

Lets not get this argument about names. Yes, some names are ridiculous, but some names just look ridiculous at first, but they're not. About Phantom: Yeah, I've RPed with him and I dont mind the name. I did at first, but then you forget about it. Although I would put a real name above my head and simply introduce myself as Phantom, I understand the part of you that wanted to avoid the metagamers, which is another part of a RP-Lite(Supposedly Medium) server. But! The point of this thread, and my two previous posts is not to drive people away. Simply because the people I was referring to will leave eventually. Why is it not possible to have a heavy RP server that doesnt prevent Grinding? Why is that a problem? Does grinding really is that opposite to RP? I cant see how. You can grind for hours, IC, not RPing that much. RP is not just a bunch of text floating above your head, cmon! The point of having a Heavy RP server for me is not to have a million rules to enforce RP or certain types of behavior. You can go freakin OOC if you like, everybody does that. Not out in the open to disturb other people, but you're free to talk with your buddies, explain something to a crowd or whatever. The point of a heavy RP server is to have CONSEQUENCES for the actions you take. And thats it. And how do you represent that? Not with a bunch of OOC rules, but IC rules, like the Law or something similar. Thats why I posted that previously. Why cant we have a server with Heavy RP (Not with a bunch of crap to enforce it OOCly, but ICly), with Full PvP, Rated R (Yeah, you can cyber if you want, why not?), with beautiful areas for adventure and lots of action, with possibility for grinding IC, but always remembering the CONSEQUENCES of your actions, as the only Rule you need. I know a lot of people like to say that this is just a game, and they play to escape reality of RL, but as a RPer and occasional-depending-on-mood-grinder-but-still-RPing, I like to think that most of us play to escape reality to live INSIDE THE REALITY of the setting, in our case, Forgotten Realms. So, if you like that argument "Chill, its just a game" than dont even bother with my post, because, "chill, its just a game" and whatever changes wont affect you, because you dont really care about what is and what isnt, right? Its just a game after all. But if you do care, im sure you think its a game, but also a virtual reality, a world within a world, that you go to escape YOUR reality, and live inside that second world, with its own reality, im sure you care how much close to that reality you chose to be in, the game really is, or at least how close can it be. I believe thats all a RPer wants. Nothing more. Alternative reality to escape reality itself. Alternative, but reality nonetheless. Zeal

Hey mate, I am not questioning your RP abilities, I am only pointing out that you are in violation with the rules But you have me intriqued, why not simply use his real name? You are position where you have full control over it, who you tell it to and don't. What difference does it make that other players can see it? If you want Phantom as you nick name in game, why not "earn" the name through role-play, so that players will address you as Phantom despite your real name showing?

I don't see why role-play and leveling can't go hand in hand

Ouch, its hard to post a giant text talking about how Heavy RP and Grinding can co-exist and have the argument pop-up again like it had never been there before, after just one post.

I believe thats all a RPer wants. Nothing more. Alternative reality to escape reality itself. Alternative, but reality nonetheless. Zeal This would be awesome! well all but the cybering because there is laws in RL that prevent that. The server would be held legally responicible for underage children wanting to cyber with an over age person even if in the virtual world they are 180 years old and 182 years old anyhow back on topic. I think there should be IC laws/consequences for actions. Thats why in the KotEC I supported the if you betray the guild then its off with your head. (permadeath) Everyone who joined knew and understood that. The laws of nature are usually more harsh and less forgiving than the civilized world. But.... ooc the RP lights nice for those new comers to the RP world. I dont consider myself a great RP and I am always seeking to get better. As long as the new comers continue to improve it dont bother me. What bothers me is when ppl dont try to get better and continueally try and screw it up for everyone else by talking ooc in a large group without cause just to chit chat. If you wanna do that instead of using tells go somewhere where ppl are standing around RPing. The Heavy RP would be ncie though because when ppl come they would have the idea already in their head of hey dont ooc unless its called for or least they will be more respectful of others. I'm not gonna try and get this topic off topic but thats part of the problem i have with the servers pvp rules. We shouldnt force our RP on others but by not being able to kill a drow is killing everyone elses rp. *shurg* so in order to not mess up your rp i have to mess up mine... Even though back in the FR imaginary world Racial hate is real, innocent ppl put on trial and hung is real, conflict happened all the time, bar fights and all such of things causing PVP. Just my thoughts. Im all for heavyer RP server just dont scare off the noobs and help them learn to RP better.

By all means, Heavy RP doesnt mean Great RP. Just means a breathing living world, with depth.

I am in complete agreement here. RP that is enforced through IC consequences (ie Heavy RP) doesn't rule out a little action or some grinding. Sure, grinding an area for a long period takes a little stretching of the imagination to keep it IC.. but we can all deal with that, right?
'Heavy RP' doesnt have to mean 'Heavy Rules'. It doesnt have to be and 'Action OR RP' server, it can be an 'Action WITH RP' server... but the RP is the important part.
No one should be able to tell a Fist character to _____ their ________. (get creative here, i've seen it all).. no one should be able to do anything without their being some logical, reality-based consequence to their action.
And to touch on a point Zeal makes.. Heavy RP is not (or doesnt have to be anyway) a bunch of talking all the time.. some of the heavy RP I see is something I would want nothing to do with.. you can't keep up with the plot lines they change so fast, and someone always has some overly dramatic issue they need fixed. It gets old.
But thats a choice that some RPers make and thats cool with me, its all IC. Keep it IC, keep it logical, keep it lore-based and have consequences for all actions. Thats all I'd like to see.
***and wow, we can't even have a temporary forum up for a few days without this conversation coming up. LOL****

Haha. This thing sure got a lot of posts. Zeal has pretty much my thinking (for the most part) except for the R part. If the server ever went there, I'd leave.
